COACHES NAMED

* Two-time defending boys Class A champion Wheeling Central haspromoted assistant Mel Stephens to head basketball coach, schoolofficials announced.

Stephens, an assistant at Wheeling Central for six years, replacesDave Wojcik, who was named an assistant at Navy.

Wheeling Central beat Parkersburg Catholic 57-43 to win its secondstraight championship.

* West Virginia Wesleyan has hired Steve Tierney as women'sbasketball coach.

Tierney, who served as an assistant on the coaching staff lastseason, takes over for Nikki Hall-Atkinson. Hall-Atkinson hasaccepted an assistant coaching position at her alma mater, LongwoodUniversity in Virginia.

Tierney inherits a squad that posted a 19-10 record and advancedto the West Virginia Conference semifinals last season.

Tierney was a four-year basketball letterman at Sam Houston StateUniversity in the 1980s.

CHAOS SOCCER

Two West Virginia Chaos home soccer games, postponed earlier thisseason, have been rescheduled. The Chaos will host Greenville at 7p.m. on July 15 at Coonskin Park and will host Richmond at 7:30 p.m.on July 16 at Coonskin.

Presold tickets for the games will be honored.

OFFICIALS SCHOOL

The Kanawha Valley Football Officials Association will hold arookie school for prospective officials. The classes are scheduledfor July 21-25 at McKinley Junior. Classes begin at 6 p.m. For moreinformation call Fred McPherson at 768-9899 or Pete Bowles at 768-0752.

BIG LEAGUE

The West Virginia District 3 Big League baseball tournament isscheduled for today through Saturday at Little Creek Park. Games inthe six-team event are scheduled at 6 and 8 p.m. today and Friday.The consolation game is set for 6 p.m. Saturday, with the final setfor 8.

Mountain State won the regular season Big League title. Teammembers are: Randy Burgess, Andrew Diegert, Derek Hastings, StephenHopkins, Randy Jarrett, James Jensen, Matt Kirk, Zach Long, ChadLynch, Chris Nugent, Ryan Pike, Greg Rider, Eric Simmons and ShaneWatson. Mountain State's manager is Dean Stone. Coaches are NealStone and Justin Lavender.
